Ontario’s standard direct option combines the CFPC Jurisdictional Route with CPSO’s Recognition of Certification without Examination policy. It may lead to a provisional certificate of registration to practise independently within scope, or an independent practice certificate if the additional MCCQE and LMCC requirements are met.
No. The CFPC route expects GMC-accredited GP vocational training, a CCT or older Certificate of Prescribed Experience, training-based MRCGP, an acceptable medical degree, and current unrestricted registration and active family practice in the relevant jurisdiction. Practice-eligible or non-standard certification may not fit this route.
Ontario uses a coordinated process rather than a simple one-agency-first sequence. CFPC requires Ontario-specific CPSO approval instead of an already issued Ontario licence, while CPSO issues the applicable certificate after CFPC awards CCFP without examination. Track CPSO approval, CFPC certification and CPSO certificate issuance as separate stages.
A physician with an acceptable medical degree and CCFP awarded without examination may be considered for a provisional certificate of registration to practise independently, limited to their scope of practice. “Provisional” in this pathway does not by itself mean supervised practice.
CCFP without examination, successful MCCQE completion and the LMCC may support an independent practice certificate of registration. The LMCC therefore affects the Ontario licence outcome rather than automatically blocking the scope-limited provisional route.
The standard CFPC/CPSO direct route does not itself impose a practice-ready assessment, supervision or Return of Service. Those conditions belong to different Ontario routes, including Practice Ready Ontario.
The standard direct route does not publish a job offer, Canadian permanent residence or Return of Service as a licensing prerequisite. You must still obtain legal authority to work in Canada before beginning employment, and a CPSO certificate does not guarantee a job.
CPSO assesses credentials for its own registration process. CFPC separately requires relevant documents to be source verified and shared through physiciansapply, so the two verification stages should not be treated as one completed task.
CPSO requires applicants to communicate effectively in English or French and may request supporting evidence. Do not assume that a test is either automatically required or automatically waived without confirming how CPSO applies its current evidence requirements to the individual application.
Practice Ready Ontario is a separate fallback for profiles that do not fit the direct CFPC jurisdictional pathway. It has different citizenship or permanent-residence, training, practice, rotation, examination and currency requirements, followed by competitive selection, assessment, supervision and a Return of Service.
