CPSA’s Approved Jurisdiction Route can lead directly to the General Register for qualifying independent-practice applications. CPSA introduced this route for applications made on or after 9 June 2025.
The profile requires graduation from a GMC-accredited GP vocational programme meeting RCGP standards and a CCT in general practice. CPSA verifies the training and completion credential before assigning the route.
No. Alberta’s published UK profile expressly identifies CCT, so MRCGP should not be treated as a substitute for a missing CCT.
That profile does not match the published CCT requirement for the Approved Jurisdiction Route. CPSA may assess another registration route, such as a practice-ready assessment pathway, but it must be evaluated separately from the General Register route.
For the Approved Jurisdiction Route, CPSA’s requirements table waives MCC examinations, the Canadian family-medicine certification examination, TDM, the PRA orientation workshop and the preliminary clinical assessment. These waivers apply to this named route and should not be assumed for other Alberta pathways.
You apply for independent practice and submit the required credentials through the prescribed application process. CPSA reviews the documents and decides whether to assign the Approved Jurisdiction Route; applicants do not self-certify for it.
CPSA requires certificates of professional conduct from every jurisdiction where you have been registered. It also requires criminal-record checks from each location where you practised for more than 90 days during the previous five years.
UK medical school or postgraduate medical education may support one of CPSA’s published English exemptions. If testing is required, CPSA accepts IELTS Academic 7, OET B or CELPIP-General 9 in each component, completed within the published validity period.
CPSA does not publish a separate numerical currency threshold specifically for the Approved Jurisdiction Route. An absence from clinical practice of three years or more may trigger return-to-practice review, while shorter or scope-specific concerns remain subject to whole-file review.
The Approved Jurisdiction Route leads to the General Register without a standard PRA, sponsor or supervision period. Licensing does not guarantee employment or immigration status, so securing a role and obtaining Canadian work authorization remain separate steps.
