CMPA membership: application and clinic start checklist
By Careviv Editorial Team, Careviv
Prepare your CMPA application, confirm the work and effective date, and organize suitable proof for a clear handoff with your Canadian clinic.

Information checked: October 19, 2026.
Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is one step toward starting a Canadian practice. Prepare your details, apply through CMPA, then confirm the start date and proof.
If you are moving from the UK, use the Canadian licensing guide too. Membership is separate from a licence, work authorization and billing registration.
What does CMPA membership provide?
CMPA is a mutual defence organization, not an insurance company. It offers medical liability protection and other help to eligible members. Assistance is discretionary: CMPA decides each request based on its facts. 7 3
This checklist helps with paperwork. Ask CMPA about your eligibility, planned work or help with a specific matter.
What do I need for a CMPA application?
Applicants must be medical graduates licensed or registered with a Canadian medical regulator. 1
You can apply before your licence number arrives. Give the intended licence type and province. Send the number and its effective date when available. 2
You will usually need a Canadian mailing address and bank account. Check the current application instructions. 1
For a short-term program without either, contact a membership administrator. Ask CMPA about other situations; do not assume an overseas arrangement will work. 1
- Contact and registration details.
- Province or territory and planned first day.
- Services, settings and other professional work.
- Questions about training or work changes.
- Documents and payment arrangements in the current application.
New applicants use the official CMPA application process. Former members use its reactivation route. Follow the route that fits your record. 1
How do I choose my CMPA type of work?
Start with all your duties, not just the job title. Ask the clinic for a list of services, settings and any work outside the main role.
Your CMPA type of work and region should reflect all professional duties. Ask CMPA for guidance if you have more than one type or region. 6
For postgraduate-to-practice moves, follow CMPA’s transition instructions. 5
Those steps end the old protection entry and add the new work, province, start date and licence details. They are specific to that training transition. 5
When can membership start?
CMPA needs the following before membership can begin: 2
- A completed application.
- Licensing information.
- Required documents.
- Payment arrangements.
Sending the form alone does not confirm membership or a start date. 2
Allow two weeks for processing under CMPA’s current guidance. This is not a guaranteed approval or start date. Ask CMPA about missing items or timing. 1
Compare your planned first day with the date CMPA confirms. If they differ, ask CMPA. Do not assume later confirmation resolves an earlier gap.
How do I get a CMPA Statement of Protection?
Members can print a CMPA Statement of Protection or obtain emailed proof through CMPA’s automated phone service. 2
Use member self-service for available tasks. A Statement of Account shows payments, not protection. 4
What should I send the clinic?
Ask which evidence the clinic needs and how to send it. Check the details; ask CMPA if dates, province or work are unclear. An application receipt is not the same as proof.
